Grodno State Medical University, Belarus

Grodno State Medical University  is a university in Grodno, Belarus. It specialises in medicine and medical psychology. It is the oldest medical school in Belarus and is considered, according some international sources, the best medical university in Belarus.

GrSMU is as a successor of the first medical school in Belarus, the Grodno Medical Academy, established in 1775 by Antoni Tyzenhaus, former mayor of Grodno, for improving almost nonexistent healthcare system in the city. Jean-Emmanuel Gilibert, French botanist, Freemason and medical doctor, became its first rector. Under his rule were trained first doctors (former illiterate peasants), built botanical garden and a chemist’s shop. The academy progressed quickly, so soon in 1781 it was reorganized into the Medicine Faculty of Vilna University.

The medical school was renovated only during Soviet-era time in 1958. Firstly, it was a small university, but with one of the best theoretical and practical base in BSSR. Officially got its university status only in 2000.

There are 45 departments of university spread across the city. Main building, completed in 1974, located at Gorkogo st. 80. Many of the departments are located at the state hospitals to provide for students practical experience. The university has 4 student hostels, 2 gyms, scientific library. Also, GrSMU contains some research laboratories, hepatological centre, computer centre.

Grodno State Medical University has one of the biggest medical libraries in the country. It includes over 420000 copies of textbooks as well as various supplementary materials, CDs, medical journals, periodicals.

The library is connected to the Internet and offers on-line access to the biomedical database, digital catalogues, and also uses up-to-date informational technologies that allow diversifying render services.

There are 4 student hostels next to the main building of the university. They can accommodate 1840 students. Two of the buildings are of flat type i.e. with attached restroom (bathroom and toilet) and a kitchen. The hostels are centrally heated (air-conditioned). Student hostels are fully furnished. Normally two or three students share one room. There are separate arrangements for both boys and girls. At the dining room foreign students are able to prepare their national food. Foreign TV channels are available as well. The maintenance personnel keeps the students hostels clean on the daily basis and make all the students living in the hostel strictly follow the rules and regulations.

The University has good sports facilities: two large gyms, wrestling training room, running track.The main sports activities are volleyball, basketball, football, mini-football, athletics, draughts, chess, swimming, eurhythmics, judo, badminton, table tennis, arm wrestling, power lifting, kettlebell lifting, and bodybuilding.
