In 1935 a collective of teachers was created by the decision of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR from the teaching staff of the Novosibirsk Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians and the Tomsk Medical Institute in the city of Novosibirsk, which began its first studies at the third year of the newly organized medical institute. The first director of NSMI was Professor I.Kh. Lifshits. During the Great Patriotic War, teachers and students made a feasible contribution to the cause of the defeat of the enemy. In difficult conditions, the training of medical personnel continued, the organization of work of hospitals was conducted, the consultative work of professors was conducted in medical institutions in Novosibirsk and the region. In subsequent years, the material and technical base and laboratory base are getting stronger, new faculties, departments and courses are appearing. Since 1997, successfully defeating the elections, the Institute was headed by Professor A.V. Efremov. The results of the re-certification of the institute in 1998 gave grounds to change its status, and, since 1999, the university was called the “Novosibirsk State Medical Academy.”

On November 10, 2005, the decision of the Accreditation Board of the Federal Service for Supervision in Education and Science changed the status of the Novosibirsk State Medical Academy to the University. The decision was approved by the order of the Federal Agency for Supervision in Auditing No. 2245 of December 5, 2005.

On February 21, 2008 Professor Marinkin Igor Olegovich was elected rector at the Conference of Teachers, Staff and Students of the Rector of the State Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education “Novosibirsk State Medical University of the Federal Agency for Public Health and Social Development”.

In September 2010, the Novosibirsk State Medical University celebrated its 75th anniversary. The university has gone a long way, has a glorious history, good traditions, highly professional staff.

Currently, the NMMU has over 1,700 employees. There are 8 faculties at the university, about 5 thousand students, 76 chairs, more than 300 and 600 clinical residents and interns. More than 200 graduate students are trained at NMMU. Classes are conducted at 70 clinical bases located in the largest medical institutions in Novosibirsk.

Scientific research in NMMU is carried out within the framework of 6 branches of science (medical, biological, pharmaceutical, sociological, economic, philosophical). Based on the results of scientific research, more than 20 doctoral and 100 master’s theses are defended annually in the thesis councils of the National Youth University, up to 7 patents for inventions are issued.
