Omsk State Medical University is one of the oldest universities in Siberia, the date of its foundation is 1920. By decision of the Orgburo of Sibrekom on November 8, 1920, a medical department was established at the Siberian Veterinary and Zootechnical Institute in Omsk, for which 186 students were admitted. In 1921 the state West Siberian Institute was established, the first rector of which became NK. Ivanov-Emin. In 1924, the university was renamed the Omsk State Medical Institute.

In the fall of 1931, the Faculty for the Protection of Motherhood and Infancy was opened, renamed later pediatric. In 1938, the Sanitary and Hygienic Faculty was opened (now medical and preventive). In 1957, there was a set for the fourth – the Dental Faculty. The fifth newly created pharmaceutical faculty began reception in 2002 for full-time education, in 2003 – for correspondence. In 1994, the institute received the status of a state medical academy. December 5, 2011 Omsk State Medical Academy joined the Omsk Medical College as a structural unit. In 2015, the Academy was awarded the status of a university. Among its graduates – more than 350 doctors, 1600 candidates of medical and biological sciences. More than 1000 employees were awarded with the badge “Shchitchnik health”, another 259 was awarded the title “Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation”, 6 “Honored Scientists”, 8 – “Honored Workers of the Higher School of Russia.” A number of graduates became academicians, correspondent members of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, foreign academies, and well-known organizers of public health.

The result of many years of university activity is the training of more than 40,000 doctors. Among the graduates there are more than 350 doctors, 1600 candidates of medical and biological sciences. Pupils work in all regions of the country, as well as in CIS countries and abroad. Undoubted achievement of OmGMU is the target set, which is 45.4% of the total number of students studying on a budgetary basis. Today, agreements have been concluded on the training of doctors with administrations and health authorities of Omsk, Kurgan, Tomsk, Novosibirsk Regions, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District, Krasnoyarsk and Altai Krais and other regions. Annually the university produces more than 8,5 thousand doctors.

The university has a training department, a center for pre-university training and vocational guidance, five faculties and four college departments, a center for advanced training and professional retraining of specialists, as well as scientific management, financial and economic management; central research laboratory; Center for International Relations and Information Technology; management of medical work and production practice; economic management; as well as self-supporting units: the center of laboratory diagnostics; a polyclinic; publishing and printing center.

Classes are held in six own buildings. In addition, for the organization of the educational process, 33 bases are used in the leading medical and medico-prophylactic institutions of the city of Omsk and the region, equipped with modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. The improvement of the educational process is developing in the direction of its continuous modernization on the basis of modern information technologies.

The university has a rich scientific medical library, numbering about 600,000 printed units, as well as an electronic reading room with access to Internet resources. Since 2002, the library is a member of ARBICON, which allows using the resources of the country’s remote libraries, and since 2005 it has joined the “Russian Medicine” project under the leadership of the CNBM, in which the medical libraries of Moscow, Perm, Kazan, Vladikavkaz, etc. participate. is carried out through an electronic system.
