The origins of the university date back to 1969 year and are connected with the foundation of Kielce Academy of Teachers. In 1973 Pedagogical University was established and six years later Jan Kochanowski became its Patron. As the Świętokrzyska Academy of Education we entered into 21st century. New faculties and specializations were created, the first rights to both doctoral degrees and degrees of doctor habilitated appeared. In 2008 year, Jan Kochanowski University was founded. During the last ten years, the university has gained about 330 million złotych. Modern buildings, lecture halls as well as state-of-the-art laboratories enable the students to feel comfortable whereas the teaching staff is provided with the opportunities to career development.
The Jan Kochanowski University (JKU) in Kielce is the only university of Świętokrzyskie region, and one of Poland’s twenty universities. It provides workplaces for 1,399 employees, including 909 university teachers, out of whom 285 hold academic titles of professors or degrees of doctors habilitated, and 457 hold doctoral degrees. The University has the rights to confer doctoral degrees in eleven disciplines, and degrees of doctor habilitated in two disciplines. It has 12,310 undergraduates, 257 doctoral students, and 666 postgraduates. The JKU offers 9 doctoral programmes as well as education in 38 fields of study at first- and second-cycle level, with almost as many as 150 specialties in a variety of disciplines in the humanities, social science, arts, medical science, natural sciences and exact sciences. The University comprises 7 Faculties: Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Health Sciences, Education and Arts, Management and Administration, as well as Faculties of Language Studies and History, and Social Science at the University’s Branch in Piotrków Trybunalski.
Founded in 2005, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, is one of the most innovative and progressive faculties at Jan Kochanowski University.In October 2015 the name of the Faculty was changed from Faculty of Health Sciences to the present one. The Faculty’s facilities feature state-of- the-art laboratory space and equipment including simulators to learn the practice of medicine. A modern faculty consists of Department of Anatomy, Department of Physiology, Department of Pathophysiology, Department of Surgery and Surgical Nursing, Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care as well as Emergency Medicine, Phantom workshop and many others.
The Institute of Medical Sciences was established by the Ordinance No. 47/2015 of Jan Kochanowski University President of June 22nd, 2015.On September 30, 2014, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education authorized the Faculty of Health Sciences to conduct long-cycle master studies of the practical profile in Medicine.

The University Library is responsible for providing information about monographs and unpublished doctoral theses as well as postdoctoral work included in GBL collections. Moreover, the summaries of documents both in Polish and English language have been introduced since 1991 year. The Department of Scientific Information in the University Library allows the access to PBLek in DVD version. Apart from that, the library has purchased the permission to use on-line version.
