GreenHeart Medical University (GMU) is an independent institution of tertiary level education, chartered by the government of Guyana with programs in medicine, nursing, and pharmacy.

Named after the famous rainforest tree of medicinal properties “Greenheart” and located in the historic city of Georgetown, Guyana, GreenHeart Medical University (GMU) started its operations in 2005 to address the need of education in the field of health sciences in Guyana and the overall region.

Managed by a newly appointed Board of Directors under advisement of highly qualified medical educators, administrators, and acclaimed physicians, GreenHeart is becoming a regional leader in health care education, research, and health services.

The University offers quality educational programs in health sciences, including medicine and nursing, that integrate professional skills, career-focused education and hands-on practice.The university is constantly developing new partnerships and affiliations with leading institutions around the world. GreenHeart Medical University is recognized by the Government of Guyana as an independent Institution of Tertiary Level, through issuance of a University Charter and approval from the Ministry of Health. GreenHeart Medical University is registered with the National Accreditation Council of Guyana under the Ministry of Education.The World Health Organization publishes AVICENNA directory of medical schools which are recognized by their respective governments. GreenHeart Medical University is registered and listed IN IMED under Foundation for Advancement in Medical Education & Research (FAIMER).FAIMER is a non-profit foundation committed to improving world health through education, established in 2000 by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. FAIMER In partnership with ECFMG promotes excellence in international health professions education through programmatic and research activities. GreenHeart Medical University School of Medicine students and graduates are eligible to sit for USMLE.

GreenHeart Medical University School of Medicine strives for academic excellence by offering students a complete and integrated program of theory and practice designed to provide the required knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become a successful and competent physician.

Teaching methods include classroom lectures, problem-based workshops, small group seminars, and standardized patient programs etc.  Students have access to illustrated self study materials, video libraries using the latest audio-visual equipment, laboratories, anatomical models, cadavers and computer-based activities.
