Friedrich Schiller University Jena  is a public research university located in Jena, Thuringia, Germany.The university was established in 1558 and is counted among the ten oldest universities in Germany. It is affiliated with six Nobel Prize winners, most recently in 2000 when Jena graduate Herbert Kroemer won the Nobel Prize for physics. It was renamed after the poet Friedrich Schiller who was teaching as professor of philosophy when Jena attracted some of the most influential minds at the turn of the 19th century. With Karl Leonhard Reinhold, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, G. W. F. Hegel, F. W. J. Schelling and Friedrich von Schlegel on its teaching staff, the university has been at the centre of the emergence of German idealism and early Romanticism.

Over 18,000 students currently study at the University in Jena, and a large proportion of these students have an international background.

The Faculty of Medicine was one of the four founding faculties of the Friedrich Schiller University Jenain 1558 and the site of many well-known physicians.  They  offer with enrollment numbers of 260 physicians and 60 dentists per academic year to our total of 2400 students, including Master students in the fields of molecular medicine and medical photonics , which are in the science and technology-oriented industry best Provide job opportunities.

The Jena University Hospital offers a total of 1,396 beds to our patients in 26 clinics. Every year, around 52,600 inpatients are cared for and more than 272,000 outpatient consultations are conducted. More than 5,000 employees work in health care, research and teaching, making the UKJ the largest employer in the region. The hospital’s canteen kitchen provides 5,500 portions of food a day for patients and employees, with two tons of food processed per day, including 1,000 rolls, 300 kilos of potatoes and 160 kilos of apples. Up to 8 tons of laundry are delivered to the hospital every day or leave it again for laundry. For the transport of all goods, food and also for waste disposal, the 24 transport robots in use in the new building alone cover about 280 kilometers per day.

There are a number of laboratories, seminar rooms and lecture halls available for the training of 2,400 students in human medicine, dentistry and the Master’s program Molecular Medicine. In Lobeda is the Medical Library with space for 111,000 volumes.
