University of Leipzig Medical Faculty, Germany

Leipzig University was founded in 1409 making it one of the oldest universities in Germany. It is an interdisciplinary, international comprehensive university.

The University consists of 14 faculties with 128 institutes. 35,000 persons research, teach and study at the university and more than 4,300 persons are employed at the University Hospital of Leipzig. The university offered 136 courses of study in the 2009/10 winter semester. 5,686 doctoral candidates are registered at the UL (2,439 in medicines), 631 of whom are enrolled in 20 structured graduate training programmes (as per the end of 2009). The research potential in Leipzig is fortified by 20 non-university research institutions and five other universities.

The Faculty of Medicine is an educational establishment for over 3,000 students in human medicine and dentistry and is closely linked to the Leipzig University Hospital. With 48 institutes and clinics and five independent departments, the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital are among the biggest medical institutions in Saxony.

The university’s urban campus comprises several locations. All in all, the university is spread across 38 locations in Leipzig. The main buildings in the city center are still located on the same land plots as the earliest university buildings in 1409. The university’s buildings in the center of Leipzig underwent substantial reconstruction from 2005, the new university’s main building being drafted by Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat. The estimated total cost for the renovation project is 140 million euros. The new buildings were scheduled to be completed in 2009/2010, in time for the university’s 600th anniversary celebrations.

Besides the faculties and other teaching institutions, several other bodies serve the university: the University Library, a university archive and administration, numerous museums  and the university hospital. The university’s Leipzig Botanical Garden, the second-oldest botanical garden in Europe. was established in 1542. The University’s Musical Instrument Museum includes one of the world’s three surviving pianos built by Bartolomeo Cristofori, the piano’s inventor. Five other Cristofori instruments are included in the Museum’s collections.

The University Library was founded in 1542 by Rector Caspar Borner starting with 1,000 books and around 1,500 manuscripts from the stocks of secularised monasteries. The current stock comprises over five million volumes; 5.2 million media units and around 7,200 current periodicals. Of these about 200,000 volumes are accessible in the open stacks, with 780 reading places available. In addition the library has a number of special collections, including around 8,700 manuscripts, approx, 3,600 incunabula, 16th century prints and around 173,000 autographs. Leipzig has a thriving student life with a large number of student run bars, sports clubs and recreational facilities for students.
