Georgetown American University School of Medicine, Guyana

Georgetown American University is a private institution in Georgetown, Guyana. It was established in November 2013 while classes commenced June 2014. Georgetown American University is a legally registered Company in the Republic of Guyana.

Georgetown American University is registered with the National Accreditation Council of Guyana since August 24, 2014. The National Accreditation council is the principal body in Guyana for conducting and advising on the accreditation and recognition of educational and training institutions, providers, programmes and awards, whether foreign or national and for the promotion of the quality and standards of education and training in Guyana.

FAIMER/IMED recognition gives GAU’s medical students the opportunity to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination,USMLE.

ECFMG will certify GAU’s  graduates who successfully complete the USMLE Step 1 and 2 to enter residency or fellowship programs in the United States that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

​GAU is listed in the World Directory of Medical School. This directory replaces the World Health Organisation’s directory as of 2014.

GAU has three faculties: School of Medicine, School of Nursing and School of Dentistry. The programs offered are:

• Doctor of Medicine – 4 year program
• Associate Degree in Nursing – 2 year program
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing – 4 year program
• Doctor of Dental Surgery – 4 year program

A four-year M.D. degree based on a curriculum that supports didactic, problem-based learning, and clinical clerkship to provide a broad based training environment for the medical students. The curriculum in the first and second years is heavily influenced by the current two-year Pre-clinical program taught in most US based medical schools who have adopted the systemic  approach to teaching medicine as opposed to the subject based approached designed over 100 year. Clinical rotations begins in the third year of the program. The core rotations are completed in the third year while electives, seminars and research project are done in the fourth year.
