The Heinrich-Heine-University Dusseldorf is one of the younger universities of North Rhine-Westphalia – founded in 1965. Since 1988 the university bears the name of the great son of the city. Today, around 30,000 students find the best conditions for academic life on the modern campus. As a campus university with short distances, all buildings including the university hospital and specialist libraries are centrally accessible
The Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) is divided into five faculties, all united on one campus. The oldest of these and at the same time the nucleus of the university is the Medical Faculty. Added to this were the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Philosophy. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Faculty of Economics and Law started operations.
he Faculty of Medicine evolved out of the former Academy of Applied Medicine, which was established in 1907. It soon achieved international recognition when leading practitioners pioneeringly integrated basic research and clinical practice. Today, the Faculty of Medicine comprises 31 institutes, 30 clinics, and two central facilities (an animal experiment facility and a biomedical research center).
HHU’s roughly triangular campus is located in the southeast of Düsseldorf, in the Bilk district. To the north, it borders on the campus of the university hospital with which it forms a unit. Both campuses together expand over approximately 1,300,000 square metres (circa 130 hectares). This unusually direct link between university and university hospital creates a “scientific suburb” on Düsseldorf’s south-eastern border.
The Student Service Centre (SSC) offers counselling and services for 12 hours each day from Monday to Friday. Beyond this regular service, various events in the course of each academic year address students’ information demands.
The main research areas of the University Hospital Düsseldorf are Cardiology and vascular medicine, Diabetes mellitus, Environmental Medicine, Hepatology, Infection biology, Molecular biology of aging, Neurosciences. With its 30 clinics and 31 institutes – more than 190000 patients are treated annually.
