Nazarbayev University School of Medicine, Kazakhstan

Nazarbayev University (NU) is a new university in Astana, Kazakhstan, dedicated in June 2010 by President Nursultan Nazarbayev. In establishing this new university, President Nazarbayev seeks to promote a qualitative leap forward in the preparation of the next generation of national technical and scientific elites in order to assist in the industrial-innovative development of the country.

Nazarbayev University is the only university in Kazakhstan holding the status of an autonomous organization of education. The university’s managing bodies are the Supreme Board of Trustees, Board of Trustees, Managing Council, Academic Council, and Research Council. The Supreme Board of Trustees is chaired by the President of Kazakhstan.

Nazarbayev University School of Medicine was formally established in 2014 and will be open to its inaugural class of students in August 2015. NUSOM is the Republic of Kazakhstan`s first US-style curriculum which will be taught in English with the goal of educating future medical leaders in health care, education and biomedical research. NUSOM offers Master in Public Health, Master of Molecular Medicine and Doctor of Medicine programs.

The Nazarbayev University Library first opened in the fall of 2010. Every week our collection grows by thousands of new materials, including books, CDs, periodicals and reference materials. The Library has also subscribed to a number of electronic resources.

The Department of Surgery at Nazarbayev University School of Medicine will have faculty members in the following fields of surgery: pediatric surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, general surgery, surgical oncology and others. The School is led by Professor Massimo Pignatelli as its first Dean and has started its MD program in August 2015 and an MPH program in August 2016. The Department of Medicine will be the largest department in the School with faculty members in all the main areas of medicine. Currently it has international and local staff members specialized in Gastroenterology/Hepatology, General Practice, Hematology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oncology, Public Health, Radiology, Surgery, Urology. The Department of Biomedical Sciences has international and local staff members specializing in various branches of basic Biomedical Sciences including Genetics, Immunology, Cellular Pathology, Cancer, Anatomy, Medical Microbiology, Neurosciences, Stem Cells and Regeneration, as well as several branches of Medicine including Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neurology and General Practice.
