Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov or formerly known as Russian State Medical University(RSMU) is an educational institute located in Moscow, Russia. It is fully accredited and recognized by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia and is currently under the authority of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation. As one of the largest medical institution in Russia and Europe, currently more than 9200 people are enrolling in almost 115 different academic departments in this university.
The first ever lecture was delivered on September 26, 1906 (documentally confirmed). The course was at that time called HMCW (Higher Medical Course for Women). The course listeners were called “medichki”. The first “medichki” graduation was in spring 1912.
Due to the popularity of the course, the entrance competition was very high. In 1906, the medical faculty students numbered 206, in 1907-1908 their number was 285. Therewith, 2128 applicants for study were rejected. So, the entrance competition equaled almost 9 people for one position.
Since the establishment of the HMCW medical department up to the February Revolution of 1917, a total of 1060 students were trained there.
The revolutionary events of 1917 gave an incentive to a new wave in the history of HMCW. The “Interim Government Herald” (Vestnik Vremennogo Pravitelstva) informed about the legislation of the draft for the transformation of women courses into women universities. However no practical implementation of the legislation followed. On top of that, the study years 1917-1918 started off with huge complications and in November the studies were dismissed. On October 16, 1918 the People’s Commisariat Board decreed to transform HMCW into 2nd Moscow State University (2nd MSU), thus becoming a new educational establishment of mixed character without considering the former a separate educational establishment.
N.I. Pirogov laid the foundations of military field surgery and surgical anatomy, led surgical clinics at the Derpt (now Tartu) University, and later the St. Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy. N.I. Pirogov was an active organizer of military medical science, paid much attention to the creation of new surgical instruments and surgical kits for the army. N.I. Pirogov was the first to apply anesthesia in the field conditions of an active army during a surgical operation. But especially brightly, his best organizational and medical qualities were manifested during the defense of the city of Sevastopol. He gave a lot of energy to the training of young doctors and the education of scientific and medical personnel. Life of N.I. Pirogov is an example of selfless service to science and the Motherland.
On November 5, 1991, by the decree of the Council of Ministers of the Russian Federation, the 2nd Molgmi them. N. Pirogov was reorganized into the Russian State Medical University. This decision once again confirmed the leading role of our university as an educational, methodical, scientific medical and medical center of Russia.
In 2010, the University, the only medical university in Russia, received the status of “National Research University” for 2010-2019.
