Shantou University Medical College, China

The history of Shantou University Medical College dates back to 1924. In that year our direct predecessor, the Chaozhou Obstetrics Training School, was founded. In 1959, the Chaozhou Obstetrics Training School obtained approval from the Chinese State Council to expand into a generic medical college offering 3-year training programs in clinical medicine. The name was changed into Guangdong Province Shantou Medical Vocational School.

When Shantou University was established in 1981, Shantou Medical Vocational School merged into the newly founded university as the medical college, and our name was changed into Shantou University Medical College (SUMC). From 1983, SUMC started offering formal 5-year bachelor programs in Clinical Medicine. In the 90’s of the previous century, we also started offering master and doctorate programs in Medicine.

SUMC offers a 5 + 3 Joint Bachelor-Master program in Clinical Medicine, a five-year program in Clinical Medicine, a five-year program in Dentistry and Stomatology, a four-year program in Nursing and a series of master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral programs in medicine. At present, there are 2,652 students enrolled in educational programs at SUMC, including 1,474 undergraduate students, 1,169 master and doctorate students, and eight international students.

With approval of the Ministry of Education of China, SUMC launched aninternational MBBS program in 2010. The program is a five-year innovative program in Clinical Medicine specially tailored to international students who have a general interest in Chinaand have the ambition to become an outstanding international clinician capable of practicing medicine in different countries around the world.

Shantou University Medical College currently has two campuses: the original medical campus in the historic center of Shantou city, and another modern campus shared with the main campus of Shantou University in the northeastern suburbs.

With a total area of 21,000 square meters, the library features 1500 seats and 27 seminar rooms, and also has an exhibition room, lecture hall, conference center and Student Lounge. The library is covered with a wireless LAN to facilitate online journals database access. It took the lead in China in applying the UHF RFID technology to its book circulation as well as book sorting and checking. Total collections exceed 1,743,000 volumes or items, and the Chaoshan Literature Collection is listed in the project CADAL-China Academic Digital Associative Library, a national digital library project co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance and National Development and Reform Commission.
