University of Witten Herdecke Faculty of Health, Germany

Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H) is a private, state-recognized non-profit university in Witten, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was the first German private institution of higher education to receive accreditation as a “Universität”, a status recognizing the university’s academic quality equivalent to state-run universities and granting the right to award next to bachelor’s and master’s degrees doctorates and the German Habilitation.

Its foundation and history has been marked by often controversial debates and significant difficulties to establish the new university in the German educational system. In 1995 Times Higher Education noted that the university was considered by some “an idealistic model for the future of German higher education and [by] others … a carbuncle on the country’s fiercely state-dominated university landscape”.Today Witten/Herdecke University has succeeded to be recognized as one of Germany’s few private universities considered ‘Humboldtian’ and as a role model in terms of course structures, integration of practical and theoretical training and innovative approaches to payment of tuition fees.

In 2015, 2107 students are enrolled at the University of Witten/Herdecke and it has a staff of 524 people, including faculty of 59 professors and 207 lecturers/researchers. About 100 PhD candidates receive a PhD degree each year from the (post)graduate School. There are also more Master students than Bachelor students, showing the university’s strength in graduate education. The university is currently enlarging its campus and extending the number of students.

The Faculty of Health combines the four disciplines “Medicine”, “Dentistry”, “Nursing Science” and “Psychology” under one roof – thus being the only institution of this kind in Germany.

The teaching and learning corridor on the ground floor of the campus building is a practice room with 17 rooms on 350 square meters. It is accessible to students via a smart card opening system 24 hours a day. Twelve rooms are equipped with tables, chairs, whiteboards and examination couches – here the POL tutorials, examination courses, emergency courses and the clinical-practical exams (OSCE’s) take place. Two rooms contain model collections and simulation dolls that students can borrow for self-study.
